Three fellowship-trained cardiologists, each with a distinct area of subspecialty focus, working together at Leo Heart Clinic.
Dr. Dufatanye trained in cardiology and angiology in Egypt before returning to practice in Kigali, and now leads Leo Heart Clinic as Clinical Director.
Dr. Dufatanye's academic focus is coronary and structural heart disease. His master's research assessed left atrial function using 3D transthoracic echocardiography and 2D speckle tracking in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis, work he presented at the EACVI Congress 2023 in Barcelona. That interest in structural imaging carried into his echocardiography training in Cairo and his observership at the Aswan Heart Center, one of the region's leading structural and coronary intervention centers.
What draws him to this field is the directness of catheter-based treatment: a narrowed valve or blocked artery diagnosed on one visit can often be addressed within the same admission, a pace of care he is working to build out further at Leo Heart Clinic.
Dr. Mucyo trained in internal medicine in Rwanda and completed his cardiology fellowship in Nairobi.
Dr. Mucyo's academic focus is heart rhythm disorders, and in particular conduction system pacing. He is co-author of a paper describing the process of setting up an electrophysiology laboratory in Rwanda, published in Heart Rhythm O2, and first author of a related registry study on outcomes of left bundle branch area pacing across African centers (the MACOP study), also published in Heart Rhythm O2. He has presented this work at the Heart Rhythm Society Congress in Chicago and at CardioRhythm Africa in Kigali, and currently serves as principal investigator on a study of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation in patients with structural heart disease.
His interest in rhythm disorders comes from watching how much treatable disease, such as heart block or atrial fibrillation, went unaddressed in Rwanda simply because pacing and rhythm monitoring were not locally available. Helping establish that capability, and now applying it at the bedside, is what keeps the work engaging.
Cardiologist
Dr. Muvunyi trained in internal medicine and adult cardiology in Rwanda, and has spent much of his career building cardiovascular care capacity at both national and district level.
Dr. Muvunyi's academic focus is advanced cardiac imaging. He is first author of a published case report on severe mitral stenosis with fast atrial fibrillation conducting through an accessory pathway, treated with percutaneous mitral valve commissurotomy and catheter ablation, presented at Africa STEMI Live 2025. He currently serves as principal investigator on a prospective cohort study of ST-elevation myocardial infarction outcomes in Rwanda, and is co-author of published work on triple antihypertensive therapy and blood pressure screening in rural Rwanda, alongside the Heart Rhythm O2 paper on setting up Rwanda's electrophysiology laboratory.
Beyond the clinic, he serves as General Secretary of the Rwanda Heart Organization and has contributed to the Rwanda Standard Treatment Guidelines and the national Essential Medicines List. His interest in imaging grew out of district-level practice, where a single bedside echocardiogram often changed the entire course of a patient's treatment, a lesson that shaped how he now approaches cardiac diagnosis.
